THE MELUNGEON COLLECTION Inspired by our Melungeon Ancestors for their grit and audacity to be ahead of the curve in cultural diversity. Like the Melungeon, Wicked Snax is not known to most but is distinguished by its mixed flavors and considered WICKED!
The term Melungeon likely comes from the French word mélange ultimately derived from the Latin verb miscēre ("to mix, mingle, intermingle") Melungeons are descendants of people of mixed ethnic ancestry who, before the end of the eighteenth century, were discovered living in limited areas of what is now the southeastern United States, notably in the Appalachian Mountains near the point where Tennessee, Virginia, and North Carolina converge. They are considered an ethnic group mainly because of their distinctive physical characteristics; distinguishing features include olive or darker skin complexion, brown or blue eyes, black or dark-brown straight hair, and European features having people call them WICKED. For their audacity to be ahead of the curve in cultural diversity. Like the Melungeon, Wicked Snax is not known to most, but distinguished by its mixed flavors and considered WICKED!!

On the 24th of September 1857, Stephen(R)and Pearson Daniels(L) were indicted in Harlan Circuit Court for the murder of Robert Shackleford. Witnesses indicate testimony indicates that at some previous time, Shackleford had shot and wounded Stephen Daniels, possibly in the shoulder as there is mention of Stephen having asked witnesses to see how the cords had drawn up in his arm.
Since that time, Shackleford had made statements to the effect that he would finish the job. The jury apparently took the point that Stephen killed Shackleford before Shackleford could kill him as they found him not guilty as indicted. ---Wicked!
"Big Haley," as she was known, wasn't isolated by her disability. Her home became famous as a kind of supermarket for top-quality Appalachian moonshine, with Mahala acting as purchasing agent and distributor. "They'd sell it by the gallons to her," said Jack of Mahala's moonshine suppliers. "A lot of people would come to church in this valley, then they'd go up the ridge, pick up a pint."
Law enforcement was aware of Big Haley's business, but powerless to stop it. As one frustrated sheriff said, she was "catchable but not fetchable." It was impossible to get her through the log cabin door, and even if it was, there was no way to move her down the treacherous ridge to the nearest road, which was three miles away. Mahala was reportedly as disappointed as the lawmen, saying that she would have liked to have seen something of the outside world. --Wicked!
Inspired the 1971 movie "Skin Game", Vardemon Vardy Collins Sr. has been called the "patriarch of the Melungeons" and has been speculated to have been one of the first settlers in the Newmans Ridge Blackwater area. The legend of Vardy Collins and Shepard "Old Buck" Gibson, Is that Old Buck, would disguise himself by darkening his brown skin and be taken to Virginia by Vardy where he was sold as a slave. His magnificent specimen of physical strength brought a fine price, like wagons, mules, and a lot of different goods, and even three hundred dollars in money was paid to old Vardy.
Once sold, Old Buck would escape ridding himself of his negro disguise swearing he was not the man sold by Collins, and the proceeds of the sale were divided.
